Bega Valley Shire Council has extended the closing date for its annual International Women’s Day scholarships to 25 January.
Council’s Manager of Community Connections, Anne Cleverley said the scholarship application period has been extended to give young women more time to apply.
“Despite the challenges of 2020, young women in our Shire continue to inspire others by working towards their goals and making a difference in their communities. We’re really encouraging our young women to apply,” Ms Cleverley said.
“There are five scholarships of up to $500 each available to help inspirational young women across our Shire achieve their goals.
“Scholarship applications can relate to arts and culture, environment, business, community, health and sport. It can be for personal goals or to support the broader community.”
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Choose to Challenge, a reference to young women challenging barriers and celebrating women's achievements.
“If you know a young woman taking on a challenge, alert them to this great opportunity to expand what they are doing,” Ms Cleverley said.
“Or if you are that young woman, consider your hopes and aspirations and think about how this scholarship could help you challenge barriers that stand in the way of making positive changes.”
A former scholarship recipient, Katie Harris, tackled the fashion industry head-on with her dreams of becoming a fashion model living with disability.
Katie has Downs syndrome and thanks to her unwavering determination, she challenged a barrier and has started on a path to a modelling career. She has gone from participating in a local inclusive fashion show to a crowd favourite and walking the catwalk for Marky Atelier, Ginan Tab and Cantik Clothing at a Sydney fashion show in 2019.
Applications close on Monday 25 January 2021.
