Bega Valley Shire Council is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of sewerage services to the community. Council collects sewage and liquid trade waste from customers and transports it to where it is treated and then disposes of it or recycles it.
Effluent is the final liquid product that is produced by and discharge from a sewage treatment plant (STP).

The main reasons for treating sewage are to protect public health and to help protect the environment in general.
Owners of properties with a connection to a Council sewerage system are required to pay sewerage charges and fees. Sewerage charge and fee income is required to pay for operating expenses, infrastructure maintenance, renewal and new infrastructure expenses, principle and interest on loans. General rates income is not used for sewerage services.
