Fish disposal

Had a good day fishing? Help keep our shire clean by disposing of your fish waste in the bins provided, or better still take it home to compost. Your soil will love it!

For the past five years we have partnered with local organics start-up, Ocean2Earth to help them establish a successful fish waste composting business.

Our role involved provision and collection of specific domestic fish waste recycling bins at six well-visited boat ramps across the shire, and use of our Merimbula Waste and Recycling Centre to process the compost.

We’re happy to say Ocean2Earth continues to be a great success and is now transitioning from domestic feedstock to commercial fishery and aquaculture waste to be processed into compost at a purpose-built facility in Eden.

This means we will no longer provide and collect fish recycling bins at the following boat ramp locations:

  • Bermagui River
  • Wallaga Lake
  • Quarantine Bay
  • Broadwater Pambula Lake
  • Kianinny in Tathra
  • Mogareeka.

Domestic fish waste will now be collected in red lid landfill bins at these locations, with an additional landfill bin placed at Kianinny owing to its popularity.

As Ocean2Earth has demonstrated how effective fish waste can be at improving soil health, we ask that you consider taking your fish waste with you to compost at home.

Please also consider our pristine waterways and refrain from disposing of fish waste in the water.

We thank Ocean2Earth for their years of service and wish them all the best as they focus on expanding their operations.

If you would like additional information regarding this change in service, please contact Council’s Waste Strategy Coordinator on 02 6499 2222 or email Council at waste@begavalley.nsw.gov.au.
