Merimbula Airport Precinct set for next phase of improvements

Works will soon commence to remove the temporary fencing along Arthur Kaine Drive, north of the Merimbula Airport terminal, as part of the next phase of improvements to the Merimbula Airport Precinct.

The temporary fencing, used to define the General Aviation precinct and meet safety requirements, will be replaced with a more permanent, modular system that looks better and is easily adaptable for future use.

Bega Valley Shire Council CEO, Anthony McMahon said the works reflect Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the airport precinct in line with future development needs.

“We understand the temporary fencing hasn’t been ideal and with the precinct layout taking shape, now’s the right time to install a more permanent and practical solution,” Mr McMahon said.

“We’re currently finalising tenancy arrangements and expect hangar and building construction to be staged over time. The new fencing will allow for this and can be easily modified as the precinct evolves.”

Drainage improvement works, funded through grant support, have also been underway in recent months to ensure the airport remains functional, resilient and ready to support aeromedical services, recreational aviation and commercial activity, including passenger airlines.

Mr McMahon said further improvements are also on the way.

“We intend to make some modest carpark improvements in the coming months to increase parking availability on the airport side of Arthur Kaine Drive. This will help ease the current reliance on parking across the road,” he said.

The fencing works will begin shortly, with minimal disruption expected to airport operations or public access.

The General Aviation Precinct will support private and commercial aviation by providing space for hangars and aviation businesses, boosting local jobs, tourism and connectivity.
