The Wool Shed's journey exemplifies that there is opportunity to be found in challenging times.
The Wool Shed, a dream realised by Sahra and Hamish Dixon, stands as a testament to their years of food and farming expertise. The old shearing shed on their Burragate property has been transformed into a versatile venue, hosting intimate farm-to-table events on a working farm. This culinary journey celebrates the interconnectedness of land, food, and community, showcasing locally sourced seasonal ingredients, including on-site produce.
Despite challenges like the Black Summer bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, The Wool Shed emerged to fill a market gap driven by the surge in domestic tourism. Visitors experienced a new desire to engage in tourist activities and connect with local farmers and produce.
“What keeps me going is my passion and my drive to share farming and sustainable food production with the wider community.”
A great example of an agritourism experience committed to business development, the Wool Shed has invested in expanding their offering by partnering with local winemakers.
“I didn’t really see any businesses that were connecting with farmers like us, allowing tourists to come onto the farm, see how the farm was run, and enjoy the produce that the farm provided. I thought it could be a really great way to connect locals and consumers to the farmers and the agricultural industry in our region.”
Sahra received invaluable support when establishing The Wool Shed, including assistance from Bega Valley Shire Council's Small Business Boost Program and the Bega Valley Innovation Hub. Their advice to others in the agritourism industry is to explore support from State, Federal, and Local Governments, tapping into newsletters and social media for funding opportunities and mentorship.
“I think it's important to connect with other businesses and people that are doing things that you really align your values with. It can be scary doing so, but it's worth it in the long run.”
The Wool Shed's philosophy is simple: celebrate the seasons and the local region while practicing sustainable and regenerative farming.
