The Black Summer bushfires and the subsequent pandemic presented considerable challenges. Amidst these difficulties, Currajong Retreat not only weathered the storm but thrived during a period of uncertainty for many.
Nestled amidst pristine farmland in the Bega Valley Shire, Currajong Retreat offers a unique experience on a 100-acre working Angora goat farm, inviting guests to connect with nature. From exploring the Towamba River banks, to wandering through farm paddocks, there is something for everyone looking to unplug and unwind.
Committed to sustainability and regenerative farming, Currajong Retreat and the adjoining farm, Currajong Common, strive to enhance soils for nutrient-dense pastures, fostering a healing environment for soil and producing healthy animals with quality mohair. Their grazing strategies mimic nature, reducing the risk of overgrazing and allowing natural processes to flourish.
Currajong Retreat faced many challenges during the construction phase as it coincided with the 2019 bushfire season and the subsequent impact of COVID-19, but despite this, the business persevered.
Currajong Retreat successfully opened in July 2020. The closure of borders presented a unique opportunity, attracting visitors from Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra seeking a country escape.
“While a steep learning curve, it proved to be a significant opportunity for the business.”
Throughout their journey, Currajong Retreat received substantial support, particularly from Destination New South Wales and Destination Southern New South Wales. Their assistance with grant applications was invaluable, offering guidance in aligning with specific criteria and providing constructive feedback before submission.
“We've now integrated tented accommodation, overlooking the Towamba River where we've linked nature to the experience and farming life, agritourism, and ecotourism.”
The provision of door-to-door food deliveries and strategically placed glamping tents highlights that even in the face of adversity, there are opportunities to turn challenges into positive business experiences.
“I've been blown away by the interest our guests have shown in agritourism and in farming.”
Currajong Retreat's success during these challenging times showcases the resilience and adaptability of businesses willing to innovate and cater to evolving customer needs.
