Future Shaper Camp

A small group of young people came together at the Future Shaper camp in July 2022 to begin turning ideas for a better life in the Bega Valley shire into a reality.

In early July 2022, the Bega Valley Future Shaper program kicked-off with a free two-day camp attended by more than 20 young people at Kianinny Bush Cottages.

The camp was an opportunity to begin work on identifying and incubating real world change projects and initiatives generated by the ideas and themes that emerged from the Bega Valley Youth Forum

In small groups, participants engaged in skills development workshops and a hackathon process to develop seven project concepts.

Future Shaper Camp Concepts

The Future Shaper camp held in July 2022 resulted in seven high-level project concepts. Some of these concepts went on to meet the criteria necessary to progress to the viable project development stage.

Students present project on Balling-not-Boring.

Balling-not-Boring

This concept is for making casual basketball and netball more accessible to young people in the Bega Valley shire by setting up free-to-use half-courts and making them permanently available to young people.

It has a specific focus on creating facilities in smaller towns and villages.

Students present project on Bega Valley Online.

Bega Valley Online

This concept is for the creation of an app developed for young people, by young people, as a central point of connection to ‘what’s going on’ for young people in the Bega Valley.

The app would include information about restaurants, protests, markets, item swaps, volunteering opportunities, housing, clubs and activities, events, festivals and employment opportunities.

Students present project on Bega Valley Youth Festival.

Bega Valley Youth Festival

The desire for a Bega Valley Youth Festival was a popular and consistent theme at the 2022 Bega Valley Youth Forum held in May.

Participants at the Future Shaper Camp held in July 2022 worked together as a team to develop concepts for a potential festival.

Students present project on Librry X.

Library X

This concept is for pop-up youth spaces in libraries. The aim is to make the most of the library facilities in the Bega Valley shire by:

  • setting up spaces that are open extended hours so young people can spend time there after school
  • offering a range of engaging resources and activities.

The concept is aimed at creating spaces where young people can grow, learn, create, shape, be, eat, enjoy, explore, expand, inspire and connect.

Students present project on Pop-Up Stops.

Pop-Up Stops

This concept is for the creation of portable bus-stops in smaller villages across the Bega Valley shire with the aim of giving young people ‘ownership’ over these assets.

Young people would be involved in the construction process as an upskilling activity, using recycled and otherwise sustainably-sourced materials.

Students present project on Street Art.1

Street Art

This concept responded to social isolation and the need to give young people the ability to express themselves artistically in public spaces.

Spaces would be set aside for young people to create street art on public walls, with a focus on upskilling through a series of workshops throughout the shire.

Students present project on Waste Awareness.

Waste Awareness project

This concept is for the deepening of the community’s understanding of recycling through the implementation of engaging signage on public bins in key locations across the Bega Valley shire, with a focus on building awareness about diverting waste from landfill.
