MEDIA RELEASE 2021 - Council has started plans to renew the iconic Merimbula Boardwalk to ensure it continues to be a key recreational and nature tourism feature of Merimbula and the Sapphire Coast.
19 July 2021
Bega Valley Shire Council has started plans to renew the iconic Merimbula Boardwalk to ensure it continues to be a key recreational and nature tourism feature of Merimbula and the Sapphire Coast.
Phase one of the project involves developing a concept design, to enable Council to seek funding for the project.
Project Manager Amelia Souter said an important part of the concept design is to find out how the local community uses the boardwalk and what’s important to them.
“The boardwalk was constructed about 24 years ago and provides a unique experience, connecting locals and visitors with the natural environment and providing important recreational activities such as walking, swimming, bird watching and recreational fishing,” Ms Souter said.
“It’s now well overdue for an upgrade and we’d like to hear from the community so we can understand what they love about it and how they’d like to use it in the future, to help inform the concept design.
“People can pop down to either end of the boardwalk on Wednesday 28 or Saturday 31 July any time between 9am and 12pm and have a chat with one of the team, in a COVID-safe way of course, or jump online and fill in the survey on our website.
“We’ll also seek community feedback once the draft concept design is developed, which we hope will be around December this year.”
The boardwalk is rated as #1 of 14 things to do in Merimbula on TripAdvisor. Located near the Merimbula Central Business District, it provides a convenient recreational and nature tourism experience. The timing of the upgrade works is dependent on Council being able to secure funding for the project.
