Community environmental and waste program grants open

Community groups interested in partnering with Bega Valley Shire Council on sustainable living projects are encouraged to apply for funding under our Sustainability Grants programs, to protect our natural environment and support innovative resource recovery.

Applications to two funding options opened today; the Community Environment Grants and the Community Waste Program Grants.

“Under the Community Environment Grants, a maximum of $6,000 per project is available to not-for-profit community groups to enhance, protect and restore the natural environmental assets of the shire,” Council’s Environmental Management Officer, Michael Fiedler said.

“Our shire is fortunate to have active and dedicated environmental champions who play an increasingly significant role in environmental protection, enhancement and education.

“The Pambula Beach Landcare group used funding from last year to work on clearing rampant weed growth between Jiguma Reserve, Crown Road Reserves running between Jiguma Reserve and Kanangra Street and roadside verges adjoining residential lots.

“Any groups keen to enhance, protect and restore our wetlands, coastal foreshores, riverbanks, and wildlife corridors, or engage in innovative environmental education projects should apply.”

Council’s Waste Strategy Coordinator, Joley Vidau said the Community Waste Program Grants will provide a maximum of $5,000 per project for not-for-profit community groups to implement waste minimisation activities or education projects that encourage sustainable waste management behaviour or support Council’s waste strategies.

“Last year Tulgeen used its grant to purchase bins and sign holders for separating waste in all its departments and services, educating people with disability and staff on correct waste disposal and improving overall waste efficiency,” Ms Vidau said.

“These grants can also be used by charity organisations to help prevent illegal dumping, such as installing CCTV, securing fencing, education and associated costs.”

To be eligible for a grant, your group or organisation must be non-profit and based in the Bega Valley Shire. Groups must also have an ABN and be incorporated (or be auspiced by an organisation that has an ABN and incorporation status) and must meet the requirements of the Community Grants Program Information and Guidelines.
