Council is seeking community feedback regarding adoption of its Code of Meeting Practice procedure.
Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking community feedback on its draft Code of Meeting Practice procedure.
This procedure has been updated to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and takes into consideration evolving governance standards as well as reference to recent guidance from the Office of Local Government, including the Councillor Conduct and Meeting Practices Discussion Paper (September 2024) and the Free Speech in Local Government in NSW Guideline (June 2025).
Councils must adopt a Code of Meeting Practice within 12 months of the local government elections. The draft procedure includes the Office of Local Government mandatory provisions and two supplementary sections relating to lodgement of petitions.
The Code of Meeting Practice procedure provides clear guidelines for Council and the community on how Council and committee meetings should be conducted. The document also aligns with Council’s Policy 6.02 Behaviour of Councillors and Staff.
You can read the report presented to Council on 23 July 2025 which explains the background.
At the conclusion of the public exhibition period, a further report will be provided to Council if submissions are received that would change the intent of the provisions. If no submissions are received, the draft policy will be finalised and published on the Council website.
