Friday 15 January 2016
Bega Valley Shire Council is conducting smoke testing of property sewer lines in some areas of Eden commencing Tuesday 19 January.
The testing is being carried out in response to the incidents of sewer surcharges in Eden during the major rain event on 12 November 2015, when pumping systems were overwhelmed by stormwater inflow to the sewer network.
Council is engaging a specialist contractor to conduct the testing.
Non-toxic smoke will be blown into sewer pipes to reveal potential places where stormwater may be entering the sewer system.
As this may result in visible smoke escaping from roof gutters, downpipes or drainage grates, please do not be alarmed if you witness smoke escaping.
Inspection outside your residence or building will also be required, and although residents do not need to be present at the time, contract workers will need to enter your property to complete inspections.
The testing of the sewer system is part of Council’s proactive approach to minimising sewer overflows and lower pumping and treatment costs.
