Bega Valley Shire Council will open the entrance to Merimbula’s Back Lake today.
The lake has nearly reached its level mark following recent heavy rain this week so digging will take place on Short Point beach at about 5pm today.
Signage and bunting will be in place for at least 48 hours to warn the public of a deep channel once the entrance is opened.
Staff will be on site to ensure onlookers maintain a safe distance, and Police and SES have been notified.
Residents and visitors are reminded that water flows from recently opened lake entrances are fast and dangerous.
Council requests that members of the public keep clear from recently opened entrances until water levels and flows are considered safe.
This includes staying clear of the sandbanks as these can become unstable when the water level is high.
Residents are also reminded that it is a criminal offence for non-authorised people to open a lake, lagoon or river entrance.
Non-authorised openings present a significant risk to public safety, local ecology and surrounding industries.
