Councillors resolved to relocate the clock tower located at the intersection of Gipps and Carp Street in Bega at Wednesday’s Bega Valley Shire Council ordinary meeting.
Council will relocate the clock tower to a more suitable location within Bega in keeping with its value to the community.
The clock tower was dedicated in 1930 to commemorate Dr Montague Evershed who practised in Bega for more than 50 years.
The future of the clock tower has been raised as part of discussions relating to the development of Littleton Gardens, master planning for the Bega main street and traffic management at the intersection of Gipps and Carp Streets.
Council staff have been researching and sourcing support for the aesthetic and mechanical maintenance to repair and refurbish the glass panes and the clock’s internal mechanisms.
The community, as with the Evershed family, will be consulted as to a new suitable location.
