Iraq War veteran, Dr Mike Kelly, will be the guest speaker in the Bega Valley Regional Gallery next week with the Shaun Gladwell exhibition as a backdrop.
On Friday 3 July at noon ABC South East Radio Content Manager Ian Campbell will host a discussion with Dr Kelly and the Gallery curator Iain Dawson on “art versus reality” which will cover living in a war zone and the connection between war and visual culture.
Light refreshments will be supplied and the event is free, but seating is limited so book your free ticket online at
There is also news that the Shaun Gladwell exhibition in the Regional Gallery has been extended to 11 July.
Mr Dawson said the Portraits of Afghanistan exhibition had been very well received by patrons so it had been extended by popular demand.
He said the Shaun Gladwell exhibition had been curated for the War Memorial in Canberra and was on loan to the Regional Gallery.
“In the video work POV mirror sequence (Tarin Kowt), Gladwell shows two soldiers filming each other inside the Australian military base in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.
“It is an intentionally active portrait of a soldier who is shown observing, controlling and adapting to an environment.
“The video cameras also create a visual web, which evokes the vast intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems of contemporary warfare,” Mr Dawson said.
The Bega Valley Regional Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Friday and from 9am to noon on Saturday.
