Have Your Say - Pet recreation areas in the Bega Valley

Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking to understand what residents think about pet recreation areas in the shire and how they use them. This will inform a review of Council's Companion Animal Control Area Procedure.

Council is reviewing the Companion Animals Control Areas Procedure 4.04.6 and we need your help!

We are conducting a review of the current leash-free and controlled dog areas within the shire, as well as seeking to understand how people use the current areas. Do we have enough spaces for pet friendly activities? Do we have too many? What do locals see as the priorities for companion animals when looking to the future?

We also want know about your understanding of companion animal legislation, compliance and enforcement.

While a companion animal is any animal that shares a living environment and relationship with humans, this procedure specifically focuses on pet cats and dogs.

Community members are encouraged to participate in a brief survey to help Council achieve the following outcomes for the Bega Valley:

  • Ensure most towns in the LGA have at least one designated off-leash dog area, with clear guidelines and promotion of leash-free zones
  • Reduce complaints related to companion animals and designated control areas for dogs
  • Implement education programs to promote responsible companion animal ownership
  • Identify potential areas for accessible dog off-leash zones, for future planning
  • Increase effective use of community facilities and spaces
  • Enhance ease of navigation for visitors looking for pet-friendly areas
  • Standardise practices and guidelines to improve consistency and understanding
  • Gain a clearer understanding of community needs and preferences
  • Identify and protect important wildlife habitats and environmentally sensitive areas.

Have Your Say

The survey aims to gain insight from shire residents on their thoughts about companion animal compliance and safety.

The survey asks what companion animal services   are most useful to you, your thoughts on the provision of companion animal control areas and what you believe our priorities should be in the future.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and asks questions about the following topics:

  • Companion Animal control and regulation
  • Designation of leash-free areas
  • Provision of open spaces for dog exercise
  • Owner responsibilities for cats and dogs
  • Services provided by Council Rangers
  • Community education.

Once all survey responses are reviewed, a report will be presented to Council in April 2025.
