Community Visitors' Scheme (CVS)

The Community Visitors' Scheme (CVS) is a government funded program established to promote lnks between people living in an aged care home and the wider community.

The CVS aims to enrich the quality of life of residents of aged care homes who may be socially isolated or lonely – whether for social or cultural reasons, or due to disability. By befriending an older person living in an aged care home, you have a chance to make a difference to their life – and to your own. Aged care homes identify residents who would be suitable for the Scheme. The home will then contact the CVS Sapphire Co-ordinator who will match the resident with a suitable community visitor, taking into account such things as shared interests, hobbies, and similarity of background, or a shared language. Once the volunteer and aged care resident are matched visits will commence. Depending on you and the resident you visit, you may spend your time together in a variety of ways. You might sit and chat, work on a hobby, discuss the local news or listen to music. If the resident is able, you might take a walk or go on an outing together. As a community visitor you add to the quality of life of the resident by being a friend and companion. You can help the resident feel more involved with their community, increasing self esteem and their well being.
