Cooler Places in a Warmer Climate

Background

Bega Valley Shire Council is consulting with the community as part of its Cooler Places in a Warmer Climate pilot project for the communities of Wyndham, Bemboka and Quaama.
The Project aims to reduce the incidence and severity of heat-related illness in these vulnerable communities by:

  • using preventative measures to create cool refuges in the local community halls, and
  • raising community awareness of the dangers of extreme heat.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s guide for Local Government, Minimising the impacts of extreme heat defines extreme heat as significantly hotter and/or more humid than average summertime temperature for a location, whereby human and animal health, and the performance of infrastructure and the delivery of services may be adversely affected.

Have Your Say

The aim of the community consultation stage of the project is to:

  • gather information about how people currently cope with extreme heat,
  • understand community views on preventative public health measures such as creating cool refuges in community halls and,
  • measure any changes in extreme heat behaviour following a series of public information sessions.

Kategic Solutions is working with Council through the community consultation phase of the project, which will take place in three parts:

  1. A survey as part of the Have Your Say process
  2. Targeted consultation with community members
  3. Public information sessions in each of the three villages as follows:
  • Bemboka Hall: Thursday, 3 December 2020 – 10am to 12 noon
  • Wyndham Hall: Thursday, 10 December 2020 – 10am to 12 noon
  • Quaama Hall: Friday, 11 December 2020 – 10am to 12 noon

The information sessions will gather feedback and input to designing cool refuges in community halls and provide helpful information about managing health during extreme heat events.

Please drop in to a public information session any time between 10am and 12 noon to have a chat, give feedback or ask questions.

Please submit surveys by 11.45pm Sunday, 20 December 2020
