Tathra Wharf and Headland Precinct Plan
The development of the Tathra wharf and headland precinct plan to inform future upgrade works at Tathra headland.
Project Summary/background
Under the NSW Government’s COVID-19 stimulus program, Bega Valley Shire Council was awarded $7.81 million (including GST) to contribute towards the wharf restoration, upgrade of the Tathra Wharf and Headland precinct.
The project will be completed in two separate portions:
- the restoration of the wharf structure and building, including the replacement of piles, girders and decking, consistent with Heritage NSW requirements; and
- the development of a precinct plan for the Tathra Headland to improve the traffic, cycle and pedestrian circulation, connectivity and wayfinding at wharf and headland.
On 15 February 2023 Council endorsed the final precinct plan for the Tathra wharf and headland. The precinct plan can be found at Plans and Strategies.
Purpose
Tathra headland is a popular place offering a range of activities, including fishing, scuba diving, Tathra wharf & museum, memorial gardens, Tathra Hotel, and access to the Wharf to Wharf walking track. Tathra wharf and the adjacent reserve at the headland are listed on the National Trust and Australian Heritage Commission registers.
Poor road layout and vehicle priority dominate the place, and there is poor pedestrian safety and no dedicated path linking the key destinations. The traffic circulation is confusing, particularly at the intersections. A poorly located parking lot at the end of Service Lane is a visual eyesore. There is inadequate wayfinding, and visitors have no awareness of their surroundings, often driving to the wharf and back to the memorial park before realising they could have walked.
The precinct plan aims to improve pedestrian movement by providing a shared path, road crossings, and wayfinding. Wharf Road remains open to cars. Parking is retained along one side – allowing the other side closest to the ocean views to act as a shared zone for cars and pedestrians. The intersections at Cliff Place, Bega Street, and Wharf Road are improved. The parking lot is removed, enhancing the visual amenity and improving the junction between Service Lane and Bega Street. Parking along Bega Street connects to a shared pathway connecting people to destinations easily. Accessible parking spots are placed at the wharf, memorial park, Tathra Hotel, and Beach Street shops and link directly to the path network.
Funding
Bega Valley Shire Council has received $7.81 million (including GST) grant funding from the NSW Government’s Stimulus Package to support regional economies to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. A small portion of this funding was allocated to the development of a precinct plan.
Currently, no funding is available to implement the plan. Council will apply for funding for detailed design and construction when opportunities arise.
