The first coat of seal on the 25-kilometre upgrade to the Towamba and Burragate roads is almost complete, with guard rails, guideposts and signage due to be completed this month.
Project Services Manager, Daniel Djikic said while this is a huge improvement for residents and regular road users, there are still some unsealed sections and further work to be undertaken later this year.
“There are five unsealed sections where artefacts were found that might have cultural significance for the local Aboriginal community, but we’re expecting Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permits to be issued by Heritage NSW in the next month or two that will allow us to upgrade and seal these remaining sections,” Mr Djikic said.
“Once that’s done, the entire road will need another two coats of seal. We need to wait a few months before we can do this to ensure any issues with the road pavement have been identified and fixed. As the road settles and traffic use increases, it’s common that some adjustments may be needed.
“The contractor, Symal Infrastructure will start moving their equipment offsite for now, but will be back to upgrade and seal the final sections once the permits are granted, and again when the final sealing starts later this year.”
The majority of slope stabilisation and repair work following the May flooding has been successfully completed by the contractor, with only a few remaining areas to be completed over the coming months.
Residents and road users are reminded of the need to observe speed restrictions when travelling on the newly sealed and unsealed parts of the road, as loose materials may present windscreen and traction risks.
The project is set to be completed in early 2022 and is funded through a $10 million grant from the NSW Government.
