Sporting facilities and grounds are available to be booked for seasonal and casual use by sporting clubs and associations, schools and community groups.

Sportsgrounds are highly valued by the local community and as such Bega Valley Shire Council is committed to providing the community with the best conditioned, fit-for-purpose, safe, accessible and modern sporting facilities possible in the most efficient manner.

Sportsgrounds in the Bega Valley Shire

Wet Weather and Oval Closures

While no one likes to see facilities closed, in some instances it is necessary. Some reasons ovals may be closed include:

• Increase risk of injury

• Damage to ground surfaces, which can result in longer term closures which can affect other users

• Increase costs to repair damage

Usually closures are directed by site committees and sporting associations or clubs.In unusual circumstances Council may direct the closure of ovals to prevent unreasonable damage.

Oval users are reminded they are required to check the ground condition is suitable for purpose prior to use. Users are responsible for unreasonable damage caused by their use / event and this is identified in the sportsgrounds bookings terms & conditions and the Sportsgrounds Facilities Management Plan. Ground closure can occur at any stage leading up to or during an event if it is deemed there is an unacceptable risk of injury or damage to the playing surface.Ground closure signage is to be used and notification of the of closure to be forwarded to Council.

Sportgrounds Facility Management Plans

Sportsgrounds include a range of infrastructure including playing surface/s for a variety of sports; lighting; irrigation systems; pavilions; toilets; parking; seating and shelters. These are managed and maintained by a mixture of Council, site committees and user groups.

There are currently 12 sportsground sites managed by Council across the Shire, with volunteer committees in place at many sites working in partnership with Council. It is important to establish management and operational plans to provide fit-for-purpose, safe and accessible sporting facilities, best utilising resources available across the Shire. An FMP provides direction for the operation, maintenance, management, planning and use of sportsgrounds and associated facilities so that the users and community’s needs are best met. It also provides an opportunity for future aspirational goals to be identified. Attached below is the latest sportsground Facility Management Plan.

Sportsground Master Plans

Master Plans have been developed for the Bega Sporting Complex, Pambula Sporting Complex, Barclay Street Sports Precinct and Valley Fields (Keith Mitchell sportsground).

A master plan provides a vision for a site, identifying what it should look like and how it should function into the future. It establishes a strong and consistent direction and a framework for ongoing improvement. The review process included project notifications and workshops with site users and neighbours.

Good Sports Program

BVSC encourages clubs to join the Good Sports program. The Good Sports program supports and inspires community sporting clubs to set up a better environment for players, volunteers, supporters, and officials, helping tackle tricky topics such as alcohol, drugs, smoking, mental health, and safe transport. Good Sports is a FREE nationally funded program and is available through a portal on any device!
