Work to start on new Shared Path at Lake Street in Merimbula

Work will commence shortly on the construction of the Lake Street Shared Path in Merimbula, which will include temporary closure of the southbound lane of Lake Street for the duration of the work.
Council’s Manager Project Development, Daniel Djikic, said the new $3.7 million shared path will be constructed alongside Lake Street, from the intersection of Main and Cliff streets to the Bar Beach entrance.
“This will provide pedestrians, joggers, parents with prams, cyclists, and those with disabilities and mobility devices, with a safer off-road alternative along Lake Street,” Mr Djikic said.
“The design endorsed by Council is 900 metres long and 2.5 metres wide and will comprise concrete on ground and elevated timber boardwalk sections.”
The path design and location follows a comprehensive community consultation process in 2018. The project is entirely funded through a NSW Government Active Transport Grant.
With the temporary road closure in place, residents and road users will need to detour via Main Street, Cliff Street and Wyeebo Street.
This temporary one-way option has been identified as the best traffic management solution, in lieu of managed two-way traffic, because it:
- is the safer alternative
- provides a significant cost saving, allowing funds to be expended on the path construction
- allows the contractor to focus on construction so the project can be delivered more efficiently.
Mr Djikic said subject to favourable weather, the duration of the work is expected to be between six and nine months, finishing in the 2020/21 financial year.
“This project is another boost to the local economy that has been under pressure following the bushfires and COVID-19.”
