Future waste management in the Bega Valley Shire
How we are moving towards zero waste.
During the past seven years, Bega Valley Shire Council has spent $13 million on landfill construction costs.
In 2020 alone, more than 24 thousand tonnes of material went into our landfill site near Bega.
To meet national waste reduction targets aiming to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2030, we need to recover much of what we currently consider to be waste. This means more recycling, greater reuse of materials, and responsible consumer choices.
To help us get there, we are constantly innovating, working with the community and developing strategies to reduce our dependency on landfill.
Recycling the future
In February 2021, councillors resolved to support a suite of projects aimed at reducing pressure on our rapidly filling landfill site, and to change the community’s perception of waste.
The projects below are the outcome of this resolution. Some are already up and running, some are small and deliverable within a short time period, and others are major projects requiring years of planning and external funding to deliver.
Together, these projects formulate a modern approach to waste management that dovetails with the principles of developing a circular economy, and aims to change the way we, as a community, think about waste.
