DCP Amendment - Eden Town Centre

Council has resolved to exhibit a draft amendment to Chapter 2.3 ‘Eden Town Centre of the Bega Valley Development Control Plan (DCP).

The purpose of the draft DCP is to maintain the distinctive identity and sense of place of the southern section of Imlay Street. To achieve this, a series of design guidelines have been drafted to ensure that future is sympathetic to the existing character. Following the exhibition of the Draft DCP Council plans to publicly exhibit a planning proposal to introduce a Heritage Conservation Area over the precinct in which the draft DCP provisions will apply.

Comments about the draft DCP are welcome during this exhibition period which runs from Thursday 4 February to Sunday 7 March 2021.

  • Totally agree with the heritage proposal.
The area is of such historical significance it should not be overshadowed by high density buildings

  • It is essential that historical precincts are preserved and protected by local government. These areas promote tourism and fulfil education opportunities for towns. Eden has such a strong historical story to tell, allowing visitors to experience that is essential.

  • I strongly agree with addressing and recognising the heritage of this area in the draft Development Control Plan 2013 proposal for Eden.
These heritage buildings are of great significance to not only the community of Eden, but nationally. This history makes a valuable contribution to the Eden's tourism industry and is a source of pride for the town's community.

  • I strongly agree with addressing and recognising the heritage of this area in the draft Development Control Plan 2013 proposal for Eden.
It is vitally important for a beautiful community like Eden, which relies on tourism to recognise its vibrant history through the maintenance of its heritage buildings and areas.

  • I was one of the facilitators of this initiative as the Eden Chamber of Commerce President at the time (September 2018).

This amendment to the DCP is essential to protect the heritage aspects of Eden's built environment. Eden is one of the few towns in the region that retains and displays the growth of the town.

This is an precinct that visitors walk through and experience these unique elements as they do.

In the meetings held with council staff and advisors the richness and presence of this precinct are well worthy of protection.

I also gained from the discussion, contrary to popular belief that property owners are often "better off" after inclusion in these areas.

As a land owner in the vicinity, I see the proposed amendments to Chapter 2.3 ‘Eden Town Centre’ of the Bega Valley Development Control Plan 2013 is an imperative action.

  • I strongly support the Draft Development Plan 2013 to make provisions for the proposed South Imlay Street Heritage Conservation Area. This precinct contains some of the oldest buildings in the Bega Valley Shire and they have been carefully preserved by their owners. It forms part of the Eden Heritage walking trail. and connects the town with Warrens Walk and the wharf. It is important any new development in this precinct does not impact any of these buildings or its distinctive identity. I am excited the BVSC is seeking to protect one of our greatest assets. Eden's unique history. is our point of difference.

  • I strongly support the creation of a South Imlay Street Eden Heritage Conservation Area. The proposed Section 2.3.6 'Precinct Specific Requirements' of the draft amendment to Chapter 2.3, 'Eden Town Centre', Bega Valley Development Control Plan 2013 provides a suitable definition of intent. As a frequent visitor to Eden, it is good to see efforts being made to retain the character of this unique area.

  • As a frequent visitor to Eden for over ten years, I feel the Draft Development Control Plan for the South Imlay Street Heritage Conservation Area is the right way forward for this area. This heritage area is a great asset for Eden. The continuing conservation of the heritage area should not be compromised with unsympathetic development. Low impact development should be a priority and a requirement for this area.
