Southern Phone Grants Scheme open

Thursday 20 August 2015

Applications are now open for the 2015 Southern Phone Grants Scheme.

Southern Phone Company Ltd is a public company owned by 41 Local Councils, one of which is Bega Valley Shire Council.

In 2014, the company implemented a new initiative in 2014 – The Southern Phone Grants Scheme. Bega Valley Shire Council participated in this scheme, and provided $25,000.00 in funding to community-based projects within the local area.

Mayor, Michael Britten said the scheme is a welcome addition to a range of grants available to local community groups.

“The Southern Phone Grants Scheme is the result of a prudent Council investment that has provided the community with ongoing funds through annual dividends and now the grants scheme.

“This adds to the raft of grants being offered to innovative community groups through Council’s Financial Assistance procedure, and our Community Partnership Fund available for infrastructure and events that generate community benefits.

“If your community group is interested in seeking assistance through any of our granting schemes I urge you to get in touch with Council for more information,” Cr Britten said.

The 2015 Southern Phone Grants Scheme will be implemented across two time periods:

Round 1 – August 2015

Round 2 – February 2016

Bega Valley Shire Council falls into the first Round – August 2015.

The objective of the scheme is to extend Southern Phone’s support to community groups and projects which would otherwise not receive adequate or any funding by Council.

These include provision of funding for projects which:

  • Provide a direct benefit to the community within the Council area
  • Would not usually be funded by Council in its normal course of business
  • Funds may only be used to provide a physical asset for, or service to, the local community within Council’s local government area.
  • Funding will only be available to legally constituted, not-for-profit, non-political and non-advocacy community groups or organisations.

Priority will be given to organisations and community groups that:

  • Have a start and finish date for project delivery
  • Have a project plan in place detailing how the project will be delivered
  • Identify specific project objectives and outcomes to be achieved as a result of funding

Funding will not usually be provided for costs that are part of day-to-day operations (such as rent on premises) unless it is an additional expense associated with the project.

Selection Criteria includes:

  • The project is located within the boundaries of your Local Council area
  • Does not duplicate an existing project, activity or service in your local community
  • Supports and strengthens community groups/volunteers
  • Contributes to a sustainable environment
  • Encourages more resilient, healthy and active communities

Applications for the Southern Phone Grants Scheme are now open, and all applicants must apply online via:

Grants which are approved will be announced on 12 October 2015.
