The Watergums Creek Bridge upgrade took a significant step forward last week with Council accepting a tender for construction at its 24 July meeting.
Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said the upgrade will improve access and resilience for the Wonboyn community and visitors.
“Prolonged rainfall events over recent years have caused the bridge to be inundated on many occasions, resulting in closures of Wonboyn Road for considerable periods of time,” Cr Fitzpatrick said.
“The new bridge has been designed to withstand the Wonboyn River and Watergums Creek flood conditions, ensuring the Wonboyn community have access to key transport links.
“The reinforced concrete structure, with a 100-year design life, will be able to withstand bushfires and will be more flood resilient thanks to its significant additional height.
“The Australian Government’s contribution under its Bridges Renewal Program and funding from the NSW Government is most welcome and means this project will be 100% funded by the grants.
“Without significant funding support like this, substantial improvements to community assets would be near impossible.”
Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain said the Bridges Renewal Program supports all local councils across Australia to improve local roads.
“This funding is part of the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to improving Australia’s bridges,” Ms McBain said.
“I know how difficult it is for local councils to keep up with the maintenance and improvement of road infrastructure.
“Providing support for larger scale infrastructure projects like the Watergums Creek Bridge upgrade helps keep our communities mobile and safe.”
Contractors will begin construction of the Watergums Creek Bridge upgrade later this year. Council will keep the community updated as the project progresses.
