Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking feedback on the draft Events Strategy 2024-2028.

The strategy guides Council and key stakeholders in supporting a diverse and sustainable events calendar that showcases the region's appeal.

“In early 2023, Bega Valley Shire Council in partnership with the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, secured NSW Government funding under the Regional NSW- Business Case and Strategy Development Fund to conduct a review of our region’s events sector,” Council’s Corporate Planning and Improvement Manager, Kaliegh Smerdon said.

“This review culminated in the development of the Events Strategy 2024-2028 and an accompanying prospectus that will be used to showcase the Bega Valley Shire as an events destination.

“Consultants, Silver Lining Strategy developed the draft strategy with input from the community, event organisers, industry stakeholders and Council staff.

“An extensive review showed how challenging it is to plan and deliver public events, with obstacles ranging from rapidly rising costs, event compliance requirements and decreasing volunteer numbers.

“Funding is an ongoing challenge as tightening government and corporate sponsorships continue to impact project feasibility for event organisers.

“We encourage residents, business owners, event organisers, volunteers and event attendees to read the draft strategy and complete a short survey to help shape the future of events in the shire.”

The strategy identifies four strategic priorities:

•              Improve processes to better support event organisers.

•              Grow the profile and attendance of existing and new events.

•              Build capacity and collaborative relationships.

•              Optimise venue use and funding to support events.

These priorities are underpinned by 28 actions. Most actions will require additional funding or resources to deliver and have been included to assist Council to source external grant funding.
