Although the Bega Valley’s FOGO compost contamination rates are among the lowest in Australia, the quality of the end product is reliant on people ‘choosing the right bin’. We decontaminate the FOGO waste by hand and have several other separation techniques the compost goes through as part of processing, but there are limitations on what we can remove. Broken glass and small pieces of plastic are particularly difficult to remove. We are continually improving our processing systems to enable us to remove contaminants, and Council delivers community education programs which aim to inform, educate, and inspire people to keep their FOGO bins contamination free.

We don’t recommend using FOGO compost to top-dress lawns.

Bega Valley Shire Council produces compost that must meet the NSW Environment Protection Authorities resource recovery Order and Exemption .  This Order & Exemption (The Compost Order 2016) ensures that the proper assessment and characterisation of waste that is intended for application to land has been managed in such a way to protect not only the environment and human health, but also to protecting the current and future uses of land on which the compost has been applied.

  2. Compost produced by Bega Valley Shire Council is made up from garden waste dropped off by the community to our transfer stations and your FOGO Kerbside Collection Service.  Given these outside feedstock sources the final product may contain glass, metal or plastics.
