We encourage you to park your caravan, boat or trailer on private property. Parking these types of vehicles on a public road can impact other road users and members of the public.

Parking your caravan, boat or trailer on a public road is usually ok for a short amount of time, but please note:

The vehicle must be registered

You must follow the time frames set out in the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021 and the NSW Road Rules 2014

Different rules will apply if it is a heavy or long vehicle - see below for more information.

You can report a caravan, boat or trailer that has been left in a public place for more than 28 days to Council. See our Abandoned and Unattended Vehicles page for more information.

What is a heavy or long vehicle?

Some caravans, motor homes and boats may be considered heavy vehicles and / or long vehicles.

Heavy vehicle means a vehicle with a GVM (gross vehicle mass) of more than 4.5 tonnes.

Long vehicle means a vehicle that, together with any load or projection, is 7.5 metres long, or longer.

Heavy vehicles and long vehicles generally cannot be parked on a street in a built-up area for more than one hour.
