The highly awaited upgrade of the Bega Sports Complex is soon set to kick off with the signing and issuing of the of the imminent construction contract which will mark a crucial milestone in the project timeline.
Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Russell Fitzpatrick said we expect to see site fencing go up in late April with demolition and construction to begin soon after.
"After months of planning and negotiations, we are pleased to see progress on this eagerly anticipated project," Cr Fitzpatrick said.
"This is a significant step towards creating a modern and versatile sporting hub for our community."
The project, which received development approval in June 2023, will address numerous deficiencies within the existing complex, including outdated facilities, non-compliant and inadequate change rooms, limited disability access, and ageing indoor courts.
The approved design promises a substantial improvement, catering to the diverse needs of sporting clubs, community groups and event organisers. The project also includes much improved, adaptable female friendly changeroom facilities which service the two ovals and indoor court.
"Our goal is to establish a facility that not only meets current needs but also anticipates future demands, accommodating a wide range of user groups,” Cr Fitzpatrick said.
"When we open the doors in 2025, the Bega Sports Complex will highlight our commitment to fostering community wellbeing through addressing and prioritising local needs.”
Council very much appreciates the support of the NSW Office of Sport which is the major funding partner for the project, contributing $11. 7 million.
Council is continuing to pursue external funding options and has submitted a Stage 2 application under the Australian Government’s Growing Regions Program, for an additional $4.8 million towards the project.
Council has committed to contribute the funding needed to complete the project, reflecting the contribution to renewal of the existing aging assets.
