One of the things that often goes unnoticed is how complicated our water supply across the Bega Valley is and how much work our Council has done over a number of decades to secure and protect our water supply.

We have five main water schemes, the Brogo scheme that serves the north of our shire, the Bemboka scheme, the Bega scheme that serves Bega/Kalaru/Tathra, the Yellow Pinch scheme that serves Tura/Merimbula and surrounding areas and the Eden scheme.

We have progressively been constructing water plants over recent years to improve the quality of our already high quality natural water sources and to protect our water supplies when we get floods and fires. What isn’t always as widely known is that a number of years ago we installed a pipeline connecting the Bega and Yellow Pinch supplies to secure supply to the south of the shire. To me, this work on securing our water supplies has been one of the greatest yet least talked about achievements of our Council.

One of the other things that I have been proud of during my time as a Councillor is the partnerships between Council and our volunteer committees that do a lot of work that can sometimes go unrecognised. For example we have a Halls Committee that supports the management of our 18 halls.

Committee members manage the hall facility hire and work with Council to bring about improvements to the management of Council’s halls. We have a General Cemetery Advisory Committee that support our 14 Council managed cemeteries across the Shire.

We also have a General Sportsground Committee to support the various sporting facilities spread across 17 sites with a range of assets at each site. These are only a few examples of the committees we have in place that help Council help the community.

In addition to the committees, we have many volunteers supporting the community in a range of ways. A big thankyou to everyone who contributes to making the Bega Valley, which I consider to be paradise, a better place for us all to live in.
