Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking community feedback on the Draft Wallaga Lake Coastal Management Program and the Draft Merimbula and Back Lake Coastal Management Program (CMP).
The two draft CMPs join the Bermagui River CMP and Lake Curalo CMP that lay the foundation for the long-term protection and management of the shire’s coastal areas.
Coastal Management Officer, Rachel Duczynski said Council prioritises management of its beaches and estuaries which are valued for their environmental value, economic contribution, recreation and cultural significance.
“These coastal areas are facing increasing pressures from development, land use practices and the impacts of climate change,” Ms Duczynski said.
“The CMPs for Wallaga Lake and Merimbula and Back Lake provide a clear framework for sustainable management while addressing current challenges and planning for the future.
“Both programs identify key actions to manage the threats facing each area, with a focus on preserving water quality and protecting important aquatic habitats.
“The CMPs also address risks associated with coastal hazards such as coastal inundation and erosion, taking into account future challenges posed by climate change and sea level rise.”
Ms Duczynski said completion of the CMPs will make Council eligible for essential grant funding to support the implementation of the outlined actions.
“The community is encouraged to visit the Have Your Say section on our website to learn more about the draft Wallaga Lake and Merimbula and Back Lake Coastal Management Programs,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity for people who use and enjoy these special places to provide feedback and help us shape long-term management strategies.”
