Bega Valley Shire libraries will recognise Law Week next week (16-22 May) with a number of special events and a showcase of their Find Legal Answers Collection.

Bega High School and Sapphire Coast Anglican College Legal Studies students will attend sessions at the Bega Library with guest speakers, Warren Foster from the Merrimans Local Aboriginal Land Council and Ruth Ferguson, a solicitor for Shoalcoast Community Legal Centre on Tuesday.

“We are excited to have these special guests at our library to give local students a unique insight for their area of study,” said Council’s Acting Library Services Coordinator, Linda Albertson.

“Mr Foster will discuss custodian lore and law and native title and Ms Ferguson will speak on criminal law, the judicatory system and the workings of a court room.”

Free drop-in advice around wills and will kits for seniors will also be available on Tuesday at Bega Library between 12pm – 3pm.  Bookings are not required.

A free Legal Aid NSW webinar, Navigating the System, will be held at Tura Murrang Library on Thursday at 11am, where a lawyer will discuss disputes with government agencies and services, such as Centrelink or health services. Decisions made by these agencies can have a major impact on individuals and attendees will be provided with information on who can help if you are unable to resolve an issue by yourself. Bookings must be made via BVSL Eventbrite or by calling the library on (02) 6499 2340. In partnership with the State Library of NSW, our libraries have a Find Legal Answers Collection that is made up of two parts, the Find Legal Answers Toolkit and the Law Books for Libraries Collection. Together they provide information on various legal topics including family law, companion animals, neighbours, consumer rights, AVOs, court cases, wills and estates and more.

These resources are available as hardcopy books for loan or use within the library.  A range of free online resources are also available at Legal Answers

For more information, please contact Council’s Library Collections Officer, Sarah Morrison on (02) 6499 2222.
