Bega Valley Shire Library and Bega Village are running a Reading is Magic colouring-in competition these school holidays, with some generous prize packs from Big W and Platypus Shoes.

Council’s Library Services Coordinator, Yvette Parker said the competition, which starts today (9 July) and ends on Friday 19 July, focuses on this year’s Book Week theme, Reading is Magic.

“We will display all competition entries at the Bega Library during Book Week in August,” Ms Parker said.

“All parents, grandparents or carers need to do is stop by the Bega Village Book Nook next to Big W with their children and relax while the kids enjoy some colouring-in.

“Alternatively, they can take the colouring-in sheets home and pop back later to place entries into the entry box located in the Book Nook.

“We greatly appreciate the support of the Bega Village management and retailers in helping to promote children’s literacy.

“Encouraging a love of reading and books sets up kids for learning at school and throughout their lives.”

The competition has three age categories and two winners per category will be awarded.

The Preschool to Kindergarten prize is $50 worth of books selected by library staff and in consultation with the winner and a $50 Big W voucher for toys.

The Year 1 to Year 3 prize is $50 worth of books selected by library staff and in consultation with the winner and a $50 Big W voucher for toys.

The Year 4 to Year 7 prize is $50 worth of books selected by library staff and in consultation with the winner and a $50 Platypus Shoes voucher.

Winning entries will be selected by library staff during the week of 22 July and parents will be notified to arrange for prize collection.

“Good luck to everyone who enters. Reading can really be a magical experience and we look forward to seeing some spell-binding colouring-in pictures,” Ms Parker said.

Every year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together with Book Week celebrations and awards to Australian children’s authors and illustrators.

This year Book Week runs from 17 to 23 August.
