There’s a new way to reach that beautiful stretch of hard-packed sand at Pambula Beach.
The new Pambula Beach Assisted Access Ramp is a Council initiative to open the beach to the whole community, but as it’s new to the Shire, Council is asking people what they think.
Council’s Manager, Leisure and Recreation, John Grady said that soft sand on beaches is an ever present barrier to people with limited mobility and the ramp would open access to the beach so locals and visitors can enjoy all it has to offer.
“People travel long distances to enjoy this beach, and the trial of this new access ramp is receiving lots of positive feedback from the community,”
“Once on the harder packed sand, many recreation opportunities become available. Walks and strolls, beach fishing, picnics, sand castles with kids and access to the water all become more possible.”

Ron Fineran of Council’s Access Advisory Committee said the ramp would improve access to the beach for people with limited mobility.
“Great stuff, a great thing it is. It was an easy run to and from the water mark. We would be interested see how it performs during the trial period and looking it over on the high tide,” he said.
Mr Grady said the trial is looking at the challenges, costs and practicalities of having an assisted access path in such an exposed and changing environment.
“A key aspect of the design is for it to be modular and semi-permanent. The aim being for sections to be easily packed and stored in the event of forecast bad weather and for it to be easily maintained and re-laid if need be,” he said.
The suppliers REPLAS won an open Request for Proposal process and have gone through a design stage to develop and trial their recycled plastic products. All stakeholders are excited to see the path installed and to see how it performs in practice.
The project has been developed by Bega Valley Shire Council. Funding was provided through the NSW Department of Family and Community Services’ Community Inclusion Project (Administered by Surf Life Saving NSW).
