The Police investigation in relation to the recent destruction of trees in Littleton Gardens, Bega is progressing.
Two young people are currently being dealt with under the Young Offenders Act, following the public release of CCTV footage from Council’s Zingel Place headquarters.
“I hate to see young people like this in trouble with the law, we are all guilty of making poor decisions in our youth,” Council’s General Manager, Leanne Barnes said.
“However this ongoing vandalism has to stop, hopefully this is the line in the sand.”
Around 20 trees were snapped or pulled out of the ground in the early hours of September 18.
Some of those plants were replacements for the 50 or so trees hacked in May this year.
“There is an opportunity here to heal some of the wounds that have been created, and the young people charged have made a start by coming forward to police,” Ms Barnes said.
“As an organisation we are open to the idea of working with these young offenders and perhaps having them assist our parks and gardens team as part of any community service order that might be imposed by the courts.”
When it comes to replacing the damaged trees, Council will sit for the time being and allow the substantial plantings that are left to settle in and establish. The recent rain and top dressing with Council’s green waste compost have also combined to reinvigorate the lawn areas.
Special lights and an information plaque will also be added soon to the impressive Two River’s sculpture just installed in the Gardens by Pambula artist Jen Mallinson.
