Bega valley recycling centre now open

Member for Bega Andrew Constance is inviting the community to drop off paints, oils, gas bottles, batteries and other household problem wastes at Bega Valley Shire Council’s new community recycling centre.
Mr Constance said he was pleased the NSW Government was able to provide more than $146,000 in grant funding for the centre under the government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.
"This service is one in a network of 100 community recycling centres and services being built and introduced across NSW under an Environmental Trust and NSW Government partnership,” Mr Constance said.
“This new facility will be a great asset to residents across the shire who can now freely dispose of household problem waste that should not go in any of the kerbside bins.”
“For residents who live in more remote areas of the Bega Valley Shire, a mobile service to collect the problem waste materials will be available later this year, following the completion of the mobile trailer.”
The recycling centre complements the existing Chemical CleanOut program to ensure that these wastes are kept out of landfill.
Environment Minister Mark Speakman said the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative aimed to keep waste out of landfill, increase food and garden waste collections, boost business recycling and invest in new infrastructure.
“The NSW Government is dedicated to improving the collection and recycling of household problem waste and has dedicated $70 million in this regard for initiatives such as the community recycling network, as part of the government’s $465.7 million Waste Less Recycle More initiative,” Mr Speakman said.
Bega Valley Shire Mayor Michael Britten welcomed the additional service the new facility provided to the community.
“We live in a truly special place. People I speak with are keenly aware of our environment, and want to do the best they can to protect it,” Cr Britten said.
“This facility provides a solution for a range of targeted wastes that are better kept out of landfill.”
The centre is located at Merimbula Waste Management Facility on Red Hill Road at Tura Beach. It is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and on Weekends between 7:30am-4:30pm.
It accepts the following problem wastes for free:
- water-based and oil-based paints
- used motor and cooking oils
- lead-acid and hand-held batteries
- gas cylinders and fire extinguishers
- conventional tube and compact fluorescent lamps
- smoke detectors
