It's up to YOUth - National Youth Week kicks off next week

Dance workshops, a youth dinner, and a basketball day are just some of the ways young people in the Bega Valley can get involved in National Youth Week 2022, running from 4 to 14 April.
Bega Valley Shire Council’s Youth Resilience Officer, Cal Champagne said Youth Week is a great opportunity for young people to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives and create and enjoy activities and events.
“The theme of this year’s youth week is It’s up to YOUth and this fits in perfectly with the focus on youth-led change that is central to Council’s YouthSpeak project,” Cal said.
“The major elements of the YouthSpeak project are the Youth Forum and Future Shaper Program. The Youth Forum in May will bring young people from across the shire to share their ideas, and the Future Shaper program that follows will take these ideas and guide and support young people to design, develop and implement real-world change projects out in the community.
“And while there’s a huge appetite among young people to get involved in positive community projects, it’s equally important they have opportunities to have fun and enjoy themselves and there are plenty of opportunities for young people to do just during Youth Week.
“Youth Week also provides a great opportunity for the wider community to look at how we can all make the Bega Valley a better place to live for 12- to 24-year-olds.”
Youth Week activities throughout the shire include:
- Youth Dance Workshops in Eden, Candelo and Bemboka
- A youth dinner night in Eden
- A Bounce into Bega basketball and BBQ event in Bega
- Ephemeral Festival in Pambula.
“We’re really stoked to see such a great range of events during Youth Week and I really hope that young people across the shire will get involved and have some fun,” Cal said.
“Over the last few months, we’ve helped run game development days, a skate competition, skate park tours, land leadership camps, basketball days and the Triangle Youth Festival. It’s been so awesome to see young people having the space to enjoy and express themselves, learn and have fun!
“And if you know a 12- to 24-year-old who has the drive to help get some good things going for young people and make real-world change in our community, encourage them to sign up for the Youth Forum and Future Shaper program.”
More information on the Youth Forum and Future Shaper program will be available on the Council website over the coming weeks.
