In September 2024, Council conducted a Community Satisfaction Survey to gauge what issues are most important to our public and provide them the opportunity for feedback.

Unsurprisingly, the community made it clear they want Council to focus on our core business including: improved roads, planning for housing, streamlined DA processing, quality sporting and community facilities. At the same time, it was implied the community wants us to cut costs to prevent any more special rate rises which creates a challenging balancing act but one we must undertake.

I’m proud Council supported my motion for a comprehensive review of the DA Process. DA processing times are longer than anyone wants, and the process is too convoluted. This review should kick off in the next few months.

We are also reviewing our values at Council to make sure accountability and transparency are front of mind when dealing with the public.

Councillors are reviewing our expenditure for our next budget, which will mean tough decisions, but from my perspective we must avoid any more special rate variations. For me, investing enough into our road network will be a clear priority as we work through the budget process.

I’m proud Council recently opened the Pambula Sporting Complex, with Bega’s to finish next year. Eden’s Barclay Street Recreational Precinct, also opened recently, is a superb outcome for the community. Providing quality sporting and recreation assets isn’t always about multi-million dollar facilities. Low cost assets like the Merimbula CBD playground must be maintained or replaced when they reach the end of their usable life. Councillors recently supported my motion to look at quotes and funding for a replacement playground for the Merimbula CBD.

Lastly, I was proud to support Council resolving to provide Merimbula Aircraft Maintenance, a locally owned business, a 20-year lease at the Merimbula Airport on their current site. This now ensures continuity of aircraft maintenance services at Merimbula Airport. Staff are still finalising that lease but hopefully it will be completed soon. Thanks for reading!
