NDIS info sessions at Bega, Eden, Tura Beach

Bega Valley Shire Council is continuing its commitment to people living with a disability in our community, through a series of popular monthly drop-in sessions explaining the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Council has provided disability services since 1992 and is well regarded by the people it supports every day.

Change is here with the NDIS rolling out now in the Bega Valley Shire.

Under the NDIS, it is expected that more local people will be eligible to receive disability support services, and much more Government spending will go towards these supports.

However, many community members are unsure if they are eligible to receive services under the NDIS, and others are not sure what supports the NDIS can potentially offer them.

“Our monthly drop in sessions have been a huge success, with people from all different backgrounds and circumstances showing up” Council’s NDIS Project Officer, Angelique McKechnie said.

“I’ve had enquiries from parents who have children with a disability, people with physical and mental health needs, couples, and young adults who aren’t sure if they even qualify for support under the NDIS” Ms McKechnie said.

“At some of the sessions, I’ve spoken to individuals for over two hours just to get through all of their questions and explain what they need to do next”.

“The feedback that I have received about the sessions has been fantastic. People feel relieved to get some answers” Ms McKechnie said.

The monthly NDIS drop-in sessions take place at Eden and Tura Marrang Libraries on the first Friday of every month, including this Friday 7 October.

No bookings are needed, just drop into Tura Marrang Library between 9.30am to 1pm, or the Eden Library from 2pm to 5pm to receive one-on-one support and information.

Council’s NDIS Project Officer can provide advice about:

NDIS rollout timeframes
How to find out about eligibility for the NDIS
What types of services participants may be able to access under this scheme
How to register for the NDIS
The types of NDIS services that Council can offer, including Support Coordination (case management) and having a Financial Plan Intermediary, where Council’s Disability Team can undertake financial management of a person’s plan to reduce the administrative burden.

There has been so much interest in the sessions that the NDIS Project Officer has also begun offering individual support sessions at Bega as well, by appointment.

People wishing to receive assistance in the Bega area can organise an appointment at any time, as Bega is where Council’s main Ageing & Disability offices are located.
