Coastal Management Programs

Council is seeking community feedback on the Draft Wallaga Lake Coastal Management Program and Draft Merimbula and Back Lake Coastal Management Program.

Background

Council has a long history of proactive management of its estuaries and beaches, under the former and coastal management frameworks including preparation of numerous estuary studies and management plans.

The NSW government has established a new coastal management framework to manage the coastal environment in an ecologically sustainable way for the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of the people of NSW. In line with this framework, Council is currently developing a series of Coastal Management Programs (CMPs) for the Bega Valley coastline.

The coastal zone is highly valued by the community for its recreational and amenity benefits, cultural heritage and is a key driver for economy in the region. The coastal environment is however under a mix of pressures including development, land use practices and climate change related factors. The preparation of CMPs presents a valuable opportunity to support sustainable management of the coastal environment, its values and its resources for current and future generations.

Have your say on the draft Wallaga Lake and Draft Merimbula and Back Lake CMPs

Each CMP outlines the key management strategies and associated actions proposed to address the identified pressures and threats to the environmental, social and economic values of the study area.
