Council's community grants program

Each year Bega Valley Shire Council provides grants and support to the community to undertake a number of activities and events or to those requiring assistance. A review of the grants program was recently completed, and presented to Council on 20 July.

Each year Bega Valley Shire Council provides grants and support to the community to undertake a number of activities and events or to those requiring assistance. A review of the grants program was recently completed, and presented to Council on 20 July.

Director Community, Relations and Leisure, Anthony Basford, said In 2015/16, Council allocated nearly $300,000 in grants and assistance to support community events, environmental projects, maintenance of local heritage and much more.

“With such a large grant and support program it was important to review the procedures and processes governing the allocation and distribution of the funds.

“We found that more information was required on what grants and support was available, and a consistent approach to application and acquittal procedures.

“Council confirmed and increased its support of the community grants program so there are now four broad grant programs that align to the areas of the Community Strategic Plan. They are an Accessible Place, an Enterprising Place, a Liveable Place and Sustainable Place, along with a number of sub-program streams based on previous areas of granting and support.

“Some highlights of the resolution included an increase to the Mumbulla Foundation grant, more funding for Seniors Week, an increase in the scholarship to recognise women and the establishment of an access grant program to support the work of the Access Advisory Committee.

“Council is also looking to hold a roundtable discussion with community festival and event holders to understand their needs and to strengthen the calendar of activities that occur across the Shire,” Mr Basford said.

The new procedures and process are currently being developed, and when finalised will be published to Council’s website with further information for organisations, groups and individuals to better understand what is available and the criteria for different grant programs.
