It’s been a busy start to the year and there is a lot going on at Council.
At the April Council meeting it was great to receive a quarterly update from staff on DA processing times. For a long time, the community has been requesting Council take steps to bring processing times down so approvals can occur sooner. Over the past nine months, average net processing times have been falling from 94 days (July-Sept 2024) to 78 days (Oct-Dec 2024) and now down to 68 days in the first quarter of 2025. Whilst there is still room for improvement, and the numbers may fluctuate, this means people in the community are waiting less time to build their extensions, granny flats, family homes and other buildings, which takes another step towards providing more housing in the Bega Valley.
In case you missed it, at the April Council meeting there were a number of exciting new projects that are progressing, but two I wanted to highlight were the Merimbula Skate Park and George Brown Oval Pavilion.
The Merimbula Skate Park has been approved and a construction firm appointed, which is great news after years of patient and passionate advocacy from the Sapphire Coast Skatepark Association.
The design for the new George Brown Oval Pavilion has also been approved and looks fantastic. The new pavilion will bring a fresh and modern facility for the Eden Tigers and other clubs to enjoy and will now go out to tender for construction. The project is being funded by the Federal and NSW government.
Finally, I’m excited to share that Council in the Community sessions are being planned for Bega, Bermagui, Eden and Merimbula in May. These sessions will provide an opportunity to meet with Councillors and Council staff to share concerns, learn about Council initiatives and ask questions about what’s important to you. More details will be shared via Council’s website and Facebook page in the coming weeks.
I look forward to connecting with you and if there’s an issue in the shire that you’d like to discuss, please get in touch with me at SDaly@begavalley.nsw.gov.au
