Wyndham, Whipstick Creek Bridge

New two-lane concrete bridge replacing the existing timber bridge, including roadworks.

History

The existing single span timber bridge on Mt Darragh Rd Road over Whipstick Creek was constructed to replace an earlier bridge destroyed by flood in 1958.

Built for the NSW Department of Main Roads by Lyall Hall Contracting using local timbers, the structure is a four-girder log bridge with a laminated timber deck fixed with steel pins, which was a novel construction method for this area at the time.

Various upgrade works, including a sealed road surface, have been added over the years, and Council has undertaken a range of testing, remedial actions, repair and upgrade works to extend longevity and maintain functionality.

The bridge is rated for GML use with 2.7m wide traffic lanes. However, structural and heritage assessments show the bridge is now approaching the end of its serviceable life.

Whipstick Bridge is located on a vital service, transport and emergency access route linking the Princes Highway and coastal localities of Eden and Pambula to Bombala and Cooma districts and beyond via the Monaro and Snowy Mountains Highway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recent experience on other timber bridge replacement projects indicates that only a small proportion of the old timbers prove to be practically or economically reusable.

Typically, some of the better pieces of timber will be returned to Council’s Bridge yard for re-use on other timber bridges.

This will be assessed once the existing timber bridge is demolished in 2022.

For safety reasons, it is not Council’s policy to make demolished materials from projects available to the public or community.

The existing bridge will be completely demolished early in the construction process. Through traffic will be maintained at ALL times, using the:

  1. Formed bypass track and temporary bridge to the north of Mt Darragh Road, or
  2. The existing bridge until demolished, or
  3. The new bridge when sufficiently built to allow single lane access (the finished bridge will have two lanes).

No unauthorised member of the public is permitted to enter either the construction site or the builder’s site areas. For emergency access please contact the contractor on 0418 613 482 or liam@kenpass.com.au, or Bega Valley Shire Council on 02 6499 2222.
