Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June). This year’s theme, More than a word. Reconciliation takes action, urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action.
“This year’s theme is particularly significant for the Bega Valley Shire as we will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the first signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as the formal partnership between local Aboriginal people and the Bega Valley Shire Council on 13 June,” Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said.
“The MOU reflects a commitment to cross-cultural relationships and increased opportunities for Aboriginal community members through improved cultural understanding and collaboration.
“Importantly, we all have a role to play in reconciliation and I would encourage everyone to set aside some time to reflect on what you can do to contribute to reconciliation.”
To recognise the many achievements of the past 20 years of the MOU, Council will hold a special community event at the Bega Commemorative Civic Centre on 25 June.
“Following an official ceremony there will be music and dance performances and the opening of a 20 Years of Achievements exhibition,” Cr Fitzpatrick said.
“This event will demonstrate to the Bega Valley community what can be achieved through partnerships and collaboration.
“Everyone across the shire will be invited to see what has already been achieved and what our plans for the future are.
“It’s an exciting and momentous occasion and we look forward to providing more detail around the celebrations in the coming weeks.”
