Bega Valley Shire Mayor, Russell Fitzpatrick invites seniors to an entertaining and illuminating, free extravaganza as part of NSW Seniors Festival in March.
The Silver Summit Seniors Conference and expo will be held in the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre on Thursday 13 March from 9am to 3pm.
Mayor Fitzpatrick said NSW Government funding has allowed Council to bring the shire’s seniors together for an engaging series of presentations, entertainment, refreshments and a mini expo of display booths.
“We have a wonderful program planned with great entertainment and live performances and will start the day with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Glenda Dixon.
“We are particularly delighted to announce that our guest speaker is performer and scriptwriter for stage, television, radio, magazines and newspapers, Jean Kittson.
“Jean will speak about staying healthy, financial security, social engagement, keeping connected and being self-determined and independent for as long as possible.
“End-of-life education specialist, trainer and author, Shanna Provost from Rest-Easy will feature twice in the summit program.
“Her first appearance will be as Dee Dee the Die Right Diva, where she uses humour to tackle the often-taboo topic of death.
“Later in the day, Shanna will talk about getting your affairs in order in eight easy steps, the importance of an advance care directive, what documentation is vital to have in place now and where to store all your important papers.
“The FixItChicks - Lish Fejer and Jenny Edwards – will bring science, sustainability and hands-on know-how to help you become more energy-smart and comfortable in your home.
“In their DIY presentation, they will share practical tips and clever hacks for making your space more efficient—saving energy, money and the planet, one fix at a time.
“Cherie Mercado from Eden, a retired physiotherapist and fitness enthusiast, will conduct a short session of chair exercises, a great way to exercise without putting pressure on joints and improve your strength and balance.
The day will close with a Q&A session with Bruce Nash, author of All the Words We Know, a wickedly funny and genuinely moving novel about memory, language and love told from the point of view of a woman with dementia.
During morning tea and at lunchtime, seniors will be encouraged to visit the exhibitor stalls where they can learn about road safety, cyber security, legal services, palliative care and more.
