Library brings biodiversity and robotics to Science Week

Bega Valley Shire Library is proud to host two events for National Science Week this month, in partnership with the Sapphire Coast Regional Science Hub and the Atlas of Life in the Coastal Wilderness.
Everyone is welcome to attend the launch this Saturday (August 13) at 11am at the Tura Marrang Library.
Library Programs and Partnerships Officer, Scott Baker said that a range of interesting activities are planned for the launch.
“The Atlas of Life Naturemapr is a new biodiversity app and people can put it to the test straight away,” he said.
“We want people to come along, download it, make observations at the nearby Tura Beach Flora Reserve and come back to the library to load data into the Atlas of Life.”
A workshop on using the new app and identifying species will run from 1pm-2.30pm.
At 11.30am, local scientist Luke Brown will talk about the results of his 16 year study of visiting tropical fish in local waters.
People will also be able to view an ocean film from the David Hannan collection and listen to local film maker Toni Houston explain the significance of this collection for our region.
Other activities include using a microscope to view a dinosaur bone and a peacock spider.
Local volunteers from the Atlas of Life will also be on hand outlining plans for the 2016 BioBlitz at the Four Winds site in Bermagui.
The second event for National Science Week will be robotics workshops at Bega library on Sunday 21 August.
The workshops will be run by the Narooma High School RoboRebels using LEGO, MINDSTORMS and EV3, with participants learning the basics of robot design and programming.
The same workshop will be run twice, first between 10am-12pm and then again between 1pm-3pm.
Mr Baker remembers that when RoboRebels visited Bega earlier this year the response was overwhelmingly positive.
“We just had to get RoboRebels back,” he said.
“The energy in the room was electric; it was great how the kids shared ideas and let their imaginations go.
“At the end of each workshop there will be an exciting challenge where you get to pit your own robot against others,” Mr Baker said.
There are no age restrictions, but each workshop is limited to 20 people so early bookings are advised. There will be a waitlist if the workshops are booked out and if there are cancellations you will be notified. Please make sure that you enter a mobile number so we can contact you right up until the day.
The price of each workshop is $10, payable in cash only, on the day.

National Science Week 2016 runs from August 13 – 21 and is an initiative of Inspiring Australia, supported by the Australian Government.
