Councillors have resolved to call for community feedback in the New Year on proposed updates to Bega Valley Shire Council’s Use of Public Land Policy.

Councillors have resolved to call for community feedback in the New Year on proposed updates to Bega Valley Shire Council’s Use of Public Land Policy.
“Since its adoption in 2022, the Use of Public Land Policy has guided approvals and management of events and activities across the shire,” Director Community, Environment and Planning, Emily Harrison said.
“However, gaps and inconsistencies identified during its implementation have highlighted the need for refinement.
“The proposed updates include changes to the fee structure for events and activities held on public land.
“A key amendment is the introduction of a simpler, transparent and more equitable fee structure that is efficient to administer while striking a balance between supporting community events and recovering costs.
“If adopted, this change would see fee exemptions for community events limited to registered charities and public authorities, ensuring fairness and consistency across the shire.”
Among other proposed policy amendments is a clarification of exemptions from Use of Public Land approvals.
“Protests and political rallies are proposed to be excluded from requiring a Use of Public Land approval, requiring only notification to Council and the Police. This ensures the protection of civil liberties while balancing public safety and convenience,” Ms Harrison said.
“Approval processes for specific activities, such as street stalls by not-for-profit groups and ancillary uses at facilities like the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre and SECCA are also being simplified to reduce red tape.
“Support for mobile food vendors is another feature of the updated policy, with new maps outlining prime sites and pre-approved locations across the shire. This encourages the community to enjoy our beautiful open spaces while balancing the needs of vendors, residents and existing businesses.”
Other proposed amendments include aligning the policy with recent changes to the Local Environmental Plan, removing outdated references and improving its overall readability.
“We’re eager to hear from as many people as possible, as the proposed updates will impact a broad range of individuals and organisations,” Ms Harrison said.
To give everyone the opportunity to have their say, the updated draft will be on public exhibition after the Christmas break, starting from 28 January 2025. The community will be notified when the documents are open for feedback.
