Active Transport Strategy project

Bega Valley Shire Council has developed an Active Transport Strategy which will provide Council with a roadmap for active transport infrastructure for the next 10 years. This will encompass all modes of active transport including walking, cycling and micro-mobility.

Shared pathway

Project background

In 2012 Council received a grant for the preparation of a shire wide Bike Plan. This plan was adopted in 2014, the purpose of the plan was to demonstrate responsive management and planning of cycling assets and affiliated infrastructure.

The Bike Plan was used to communicate the direction of cycling in the Shire. However, the routes and priorities outlined in the previous work do not consider other modes of active transport such as walking or micro-mobility solutions or recent changes in strategic planning for the region or reflect the vision of the Council.

This Active Transport Strategy and action plan will supersede the Bike Plan and represent our new vision for walking, cycling and microbility across the Shire.

The Final Active Transport Strategy (Final Report) has been presented to Council for adoption as a key planning document that will shape the Council’s strategic active transport agenda for the shire for the next 10 years. The Strategy sets out the vision and the high-level direction and is complemented by a prioritised action plan with identified funding streams.

The Active Transport Strategy encompasses all modes of active transport including walking, cycling and micro-mobility.

Bega Valley Shire Council teamed up with PSA consulting to undertake a new Active Transport Strategy (ATS) for the Council area. The strategy identifies the gaps in our existing shared path network and allow Council to prioritise new footpath and cycleway projects. The Plan will assist Council to seek full or co-funding opportunities for future infrastructure to be constructed.

The goal of this 10-year plan is to create a high-quality connected walking and cycling network that enables more people to get to and from the places we live, work, shop and play. The plan will include an action list of priority projects that will help take us there.

Purpose

The Active Transport Strategy outlines what we want our walking, cycling and micro-mobility infrastructure to look like and inform where to prioritise investment over the next decade, based on a number of core focus areas.

The final strategy is a planning document and will shape Council’s strategic active transport future and outline how it will pursue improvements to the active transport network.
