Bega Valley Shire Council is proud to have assisted local fish composting startup, Ocean2Earth in building a highly successful and sustainable business.

For the past five years, the innovative business has transformed fish waste from the shire's busy boat ramp areas into a nutrient-rich compost highly prized by gardeners.

Waste Strategy Coordinator, Tim Cook said Council provided essential support for the business to grow by allowing free processing space at the Merimbula Waste and Recycling Centre.

"It’s great to see Ocean2Earth growing as it transitions its feedstock from recreational fish waste to commercial fisheries and aquaculture waste,” Mr Cook said.

“This move means Ocean2Earth has outgrown its processing space at the Merimbula Waste and Recycling Centre and will be moving to a purpose-built facility in Eden.”

As a result, Council is now collecting fish waste in red lid bins at the following boat ramps:

  • Bermagui River
  • Wallaga Lake
  • Quarantine Bay
  • Broadwater Pambula Lake
  • Kianinny in Tathra (extra bin provided at this location due to popularity)
  • Mogareeka.

Mr Cook said people returning from a successful day fishing are asked to use the red top bins or better still compost their fish waste at home.

"We wish Ocean2Earth all the best as their business grows and we are proud to have played a part in helping local innovation.”
