Illegal waste in Mimosa Rocks and Eden

Rangers from Bega Valley Shire Council have notched up a number of environmental victories in their ongoing campaign against illegal waste in the Shire.
Working with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Council Rangers have investigated waste sites around Quarry Road and Doctor George Mountain Road in the Mimosa Rocks National Park.
Senior Ranger, Chris Pearson said that as a result of the collaboration with National Parks clean up notices and fines have been issued to a number of people.
“The community will be pleased to know that the waste has now been cleaned up at no cost to Council or National Parks,” Mr Pearson said.
Eden has also been a focus, with investigations leading to a number of fines being issued, while further matters are pending.
“Typically we are dealing with whitegoods, mattresses, building materials, car parts, domestic garbage and green waste,” Mr Pearson said
“The community are rightly upset by the actions of illegal waste offenders and Ranger Services take a zero tolerance approach to people found to have offended.”
Fines range between $250 and $8000 depending on the aggravated nature and size of the waste.
“There is a propensity for offenders to avoid disposal charges at Council’s waste facilities,” Mr Pearson said.
Surveillance cameras are just one of the tools Rangers use to identify waste offenders along with other contemporary and modern investigative methods all aimed at protecting the Bega Valley’s environment and keeping the community free of waste and litter.
“Rangers always appreciate the assistance of the community in these matters and welcome any information,” Mr Pearson said.
